Follow-up on long-term heat plan for Greater Copenhagen

The three major heating companies in Copenhagen, VEKS, Copenhagen Energy and the Metropolitan Copenhagen Heating Transmission company (known as CTR), has completed a  common project, Heat Plan Greater Copenhagen 2, aiming to establish a concrete basis for decisions on the future heat supply in Greater Copenhagen.

The project proposes three scenarios for the development of the district heating system:

1. The reference scenario - continues the current trend. Two of the major coal-fired power plants are converted to biomass firing.
2. The low-bio-scenario - the conversion of the above plants is not performed.
3. The CO2-neutral scenario - provides a way to make district heating in Greater Copenhagen CO2-neutral by 2025.

The project is a follow-up on the study Long-term heat plan for Greater Copenhagen, which was carried out in 2008 and 2009 and described a range of options for the district heating system in Greater Copenhagen.

The follow-up on the long-term heat plan for Greater Copenhagen was organised in the same way as the previous study. The project was carried out by the three heating companies VEKS, Copenhagen Energy and CTR assisted by Ea Energy Analyses.

The analyses were carried out in 2011 and were completed in Sepember.
