Mali: Renewable energy resources

In 2007-2008 Denmark and Mali initiated a study of renewable energy resources in Mali. In 2009 a follow-up project was formulated containing three main subjects:

  1. Development of wind and solar power maps
  2. Mapping of the potential to utilize agricultural waste products in the energy production
  3. Analysis of the potential of bioethanol production based on manioc (cassava)

Ea Energy Analyses is participating in the second sub topic of this project and is carrying out a preliminary study on the possibilities of establishing a biomass CHP plant based on rice straw. This study is carried out together with Risø-DTU, Mali Folkecenter Nyetaa and DNE/CNESOLER. As a part of the project the location of the CHP will be adjusted with respect to the existing power system and the presence of the rice straw resource. The project will also include estimates of costs, CO2 reductions and effects on local employment.

The project is carried out in the period 2009 – 2011 and is funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ environmental support program. Risø-DTU is project manager of the main project.
