Ea Energy Analyses recently participated in the latest meeting of IEA Bioenergy Deployment of biogenic value chains and carbon management task meeting in Germany. Ea represents Denmark in the task, which brings together international experts working with sustainable biomass value chains, cascading use of biomass and management of biogenic carbon, including BECCS and BECCU.
Alongside discussions of ongoing and future work, the meeting included a visit to UPM’s biorefinery in Leuna, traditionally a forest, pulp and paper company, is investing in new ways of creating higher-value products from lignocellulosic biomass. The refinery uses beechwood and sawmill residues to produce biobased chemicals and materials that can substitute fossil-based alternatives.
The visit also highlighted some of the challenges of moving towards more carbon-efficient use of biomass. Developing the technology is only part of the transition: suitable biomass resources need to be available, new value chains need to be established, and markets need to develop for biobased products. Here, policy-driven market demand particularly important.
Through our work in IEA Bioenergy, Ea contributes Danish knowledge and experience to this international collaboration while bringing new perspectives and developments back into our work in Denmark.
