The future district heating supply in the area of TVIS

Denmark | January 2013 - March 2013

Ea Energy Analyses has been assessing the future heat production for the owner municipalities of TVIS, Vejle, Fredericia, Middelfart and Kolding. This includes an investigation of options for using new technologies of heat production in the district heating system of TVIS.

Among other things, the background to this study was that the current natural gas from Skærbæk Power Station is relatively expensive, and the agreement with DONG Energy, owner of the Skærbæk Power Station, expires in 2017. This allows for a fuel or technology shift to another and cheaper heat supply with lower CO2 emission.

Based on a review of the technical options for heat supply in the area and an analysis of heating cost of various technologies, five alternative scenarios for future heat supply in the area were set up. In the scenarios different degrees of implementation of new technologies and renewable energy were combined.

The scenarios were evaluated based on criteria regarding economy, security of supply, climate impacts and renewable energy, local environmental conditions, local employment, future proof, interaction with the power system, political resilience and risks.
