In April and May 2025, Ea Energy Analyses delivered a three-week course on energy systems modelling using Balmorel. Ea partnered with Energy Modelling Lab to conduct the course for 19 participants from eight countries: Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Türkiye, and Vietnam.
During the course, participants received an introduction to energy systems analysis and mathematical modelling. The theories, hands-on exercises, and group activities equipped the participants with the skill to build and carry out energy system analysis using Balmorel, enabled them to think critically and analyse the implications of economic policy measures, and understand and enhance the model further. A cloud-based setup was created for running the models, and participants also used excel-based tools – such as the GDX Tool and BERSERQ, developed by Ea to facilitate the modelling activities.
The course was sponsored by the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) as part of the DFC Scholarship Programme with an aim to deliver capacity building in the field of energy modelling, planning and policy making.
