Screening of locations for new heat production plants in Allerød Municipality

Denmark | November 2023 - April 2024

Today, large parts of the heating demand in Allerød Municipality are supplied by individual natural gas boilers. The boilers make up about 60% of the heating installations in the municipality, while district heating only makes up a little over 10%. 30% of the total carbon emissions in the municipality come from heating of buildings, which makes heat planning a cornerstone in the climate planning of the municipality.

Allerød Municipality has a target of getting the entire electricity and heat supply carbon neutral by 2035. Norfors presented a roll-out plan in July 2022, which describes their plans for expanding the district heating.

The municipal council in Allerød adopted Varmeplan 2022 (Heat Plan 2022) in December 2022, which maps the areas where district heating is expected to be rolled out, and the areas where it is not.

In the new district heating areas, the expansion of the district heating network requires new production facilities that must be based on renewable energy sources. This could for instance be heat pumps and groundwater heat pumps, electric boilers, solar thermal systems, etc.

For Allerød Municipality, Ea Energy Analyses has identified suitable locations for the new production facilities and mapped barriers and opportunities for establishment. The starting point was the technologies that, based on a professional assessment, were relevant for the district heating expansion in the municipality and which would contribute to reducing carbon emissions from the heat supply.

The analysis resulted in a report containing a screening of Allerød Municipality’s total area to assess which areas are suitable for the establishment of new heat production plants and where there are barriers. In the screening, the barriers were divided into two groups: parameters of high importance and parameters of medium importance.

The project ran from November 2023 to April 2024.
