Use of surplus heat from data centre in Høje Taastrup

Balmorel: Power system model | September 2019 - December 2020

This project was about setting up a heat pump system connected to a future data centre in Høje Taastrup. The heat pump would be using surplus heat generated from the cooling of the data centre to produce heat for the district heating grid.

A part of the project concerned ensuring that the heat pump system could deliver to both the distribution grid of Høje Taastrup Fjernvarme and the transmission grid for VEKS at a higher temperature. This created certain demands for the heat pump technology.

Ea Energy Analyses assisted with calculations on dispatch of heat production with the energy systems model Balmorel to shed light on how the heat pump system could be integrated into the district heating grid. The analyses were carried out for the time period 2020-2040, and data assumptions for this period was set up for, amongst other things, technical data for production units in the Greater Copenhagen district heating system, heat prognoses, fuel prices, electricity prices and prices for CO2 quotas.

The project ran from September 2019 to the end of 2020 and was carried out in cooperation with PlanEnergi for VEKS and Høje Taastrup Fjernvarme.
