During a recent mission to Indonesia, Ea consultants taught a new course – the latest in our portfolio.
This course is aimed at civil servants working with energy in various ways, who do not have a technical background in that area. In the course, the theoretical foundations of energy planning are presented, before moving to a technical dive into energy models. The course in Indonesia was carried out as part of the INDODEPP program by the Danish Energy Agency, who funded the course and also took part in conducting it.
The course balances the deep dive into the theoretical concepts through practical exercises, enabling participants to apply their newly gained knowledge and see theory in action. Time was spent discussing how liberalised electricity markets work, as this is the foundation of how the energy system model Balmorel does optimisation. For instance, the participants were at one point representing various power plants and then bidding their prices to the electricity market, and they also tried their hand at doing market clearing and observing how electricity prices were affected.
The new course works as an introduction to energy system planning, preparing the participants to participate in one of our courses in Balmorel.
We also dove into how to combine technologies to ensure there is enough flexibility, storage and backup in a system, so it is operationally reliable. Finally, there was a lot of focus on the different demands and wishes a society can have for the electricity system – the so-called energy trilemma, where economy, environmental and climate impact, and security of supply must be balanced.
At Ea, we have extensive experience delivering courses on energy system models, including:
Each course is tailored to meet the specific needs of our participants, ensuring practical and relevant learning experiences. Our courses can be conducted both online and in person to accommodate different preferences and requirements.
