PEM Consult and Ea Energy Analyses assisted DSIF (Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance) in assessing whether a biomass project on the Indonesian island of Lombok was eligible for DSIF funding and could move forward.
The project proposal presented by the Indonesian partners was to construct a 20-40 MW biomass power plant, using residues from rice and corn cultivation. Lombok has no fossil energy resources and is presently dependent on imported coal and expensive diesel for electricity generation. The purpose was to introduce a more sustainable and hopefully cheaper source of energy into the energy mix, and hence contribute to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions.
The project included an assessment of the production and use of local biomass residues from agriculture with assistance from local consultants as well as an evaluation of different technology choices for utilization of biomass for power production
The project ran from February 2021 to August 2022.
Lombok is one of the main islands in the West Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia. As a follow-up on the Lombok-project, the local government requested DSIF to also assess the biomass resources in the other main island of the province, Sumbawa. In May to December 2022, Ea Energy Analyses and PEM Consult made an assessment of the biomass resources available for energy production in one, large part of Sumbawa. The work in Sumbawa was undertaken by local consultants and PEM and Ea made the necessary QA of the work.
