Climate change and the future Nordic energy system

| February 2005 - May 2006

Climate changes will have serious consequences, but how will they affect the energy system?

Swedish Optensys Energianalys and Danish Ea Energy Analyses have analysed a number of conditions that can be expected to influence the development in the energy system in the long term. These possible changes have then been compared with the influence of climate changes.

The average changes in temperature, winds and precipitation will only have marginal influence on the energy system. Other economic and technological changes will have far greater impact than climate changes.

If extreme climate changes become more frequent, they may, however, have considerable consequences. Extreme climate changes are for example storms, drought and extreme precipitation. The energy system is sensitive to such incidents which may threaten security of supply. Climate researchers do, however, not describe the prospects of more extreme climate changes very clearly.
