South African Interconnector Study

Balmorel: Power system model | June 2014 - January 2016

The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building has entered a co-operation with South Africa, with the purpose of reducing the emissions of greenhouse gasses by increasing the share of sustainable energy (primarily wind power) in energy production of South Africa.

In this context, Ea Energy Analyses participated in a project with the purpose of estimating the value of import of electricity into the South African power system from hydropower plants in neighboring African countries.

Ea Energy Analysis assisted in gathering data of: Existing and planned power generation projects, electricity consumption, and transmission grid and generation costs of new and existing units. The data was implemented into the Balmorel model and used to analyse the economic and operational effects of importing power from hydro power plants in DRC, Zambia and Mozambique.

Ea Energy Analyses conducted the project in cooperation with the Technical University of Denmark for the Danish Energy Agency.
