ENERGY MODELLING STUDY FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Balmorel: Power system model | July 2019 - June 2020

Ea Energy Analyses is consultant for DEA (Danish Energy Agency) in this modelling study. The objective is to study the potential impact of enhanced thermal power plant flexibility in the South African power system in the context of integration of increasing amounts of variable renewables (wind and solar). The focus is on the potential value of added flexibility of fossil power plants (mainly coal). This includes analysis of new flexible fossil plants and retrofitting existing plants.

The modelling is carried out with the Balmorel model.

The project is part of the South African Danish Energy Partnership Programme and is financed by DEA. From South Africa the power utility ESKOM is participating in the project.
