The Danish government has initiated a government-to-government cooperation with Egypt on the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) in the power sector. This has the objective of accelerating the green transition in Egypt through the exchange of experiences in energy system planning, integration of VRE in the power sector, wind power assessments, and energy efficiency.
One of the project outcomes centres on the development of a computational model for long-term planning of the Egyptian power system, based on the power system model Balmorel. A basic version of the Balmorel-Egypt model already existed, but much of its input data required updating. Egyptian partner institutions, the Danish Energy Agency (DEA), and Ea are collaborating on this.
Another project outcome is an increased capability for power sector planning for VRE in the Egyptian institutions involved in the Balmorel model. To this end, Ea Energy Analyses has carried out three training courses for participants from local institutions and government bodies.
The overall goal is to reach a stage where the partners can operate, maintain, and develop Balmorel without external assistance, as the Balmorel power sector model will be the core tool for long-term energy system planning in Egypt.
The project is carried out for the Danish Energy Agency, and it runs from January 2022 to December 2023.
