Strategic energy plan for Sønderborg Municipality

Denmark | June 2020 - October 2020

In this project, Ea Energy Analyses aided Sønderborg Municipality in updating their strategic energy plan.

The updated energy plan illuminates how Sønderborg Municipality can become carbon neutral in 2029 in the energy and transport sectors. The plan builds on the existing strategic energy plan from 2015 and the 2029 scenario, which was set up as a part of the Project Zero’s Roadmap2025. The reduction targets in Roadmap 2025 were not changed.

The plan also addresses measures to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This goal encompasses all greenhouse gas emissions in Sønderborg, including methane and laughing gas emissions from the farming industry. Carbon compensating measures, such as export of green energy to other municipalities, cannot be counted towards the 2050 goal.

The background for updating the energy plan was the significant changes in the national framework conditions that happened during 2018 and 2019, especially the passing of the climate bill and the goal of 70% reduction of the national greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, as well as new technological opportunities within especially sector coupling and PtX.

The energy plan can be downloaded on this page. The project ran from June to October 2020.
