The Danish wood pellet market in 2022

Denmark | January 2023 - November 2023

On behalf of the Danish Energy Agency, Ea Energy Analyses has mapped the total demand and supply of wood pellets to the Danish market in 2022. This is a biennial study, which was also carried out by Ea in 2016, 2018, and 2020.

The wood pellet consumption is comprised of consumption within the supply sector (heat plants and CHP’s) and consumption outside the supply sector (private heating, public institutions, and industry). The consumption outside the supply sector has been found by subtracting the consumption in the plants, which are known from the annual energy supply count, made by the Danish Energy Agency, from the total supply.

The mapping showed that the total consumption was at the level of the previous study in 2020, but that there were fluctuations in the consumption within the specific groups – for instance had the consumption for CHP’s risen, while the consumption for private heating had fallen.

Prices

A survey of wood pellet prices in the Danish market was also conducted. The information was obtained through a study with four parts:

  1. Questionnaire to Danish producers, importers and dealers of wood pellets
  2. Request for import information from a selection of Danish thermal plants and CHP plants using wood pellets
  3. Extract from the Danish Energy Producer Census (“Energiproducenttællingen”) for 2022
  4. Telephone interviews with industry actors.
